How to Make Tahini

This homemade tahini is easy to make and can be whipped up in a matter of minutes. Made simply from toasted sesame seeds, homemade tahini is a delicious, inexpensive alternative to the store-bought jars.

When I think of tahini, I think of delicious, creamy hummus. Tahini is an important ingredient in most hummus recipes, but it’s also used in salad dressings and even some sweet treats. Essentially sesame seed butter, tahini can easily be made at home using a similar method to how I make Homemade Coconut Butter, and it tends to be more cost effective to make yourself than buying a jar from the grocery store.

You can use a high-speed blender or food processor to make tahini at home, and although it’s not necessary, I like to lightly toast the sesame seeds prior to processing them. The gentle toasting adds a slight nuttiness to the tahini, and the warmth helps to bring out the natural oils of the sesame seeds, resulting in an ultra-creamy texture.

This recipe uses only sesame seeds to make the tahini more versatile, but if you prefer a thinner consistency, feel free to drizzle in a tablespoon or two of extra virgin olive oil while it’s processing.

One of my favourite ways to enjoy tahini lately is drizzled over roasted sweet potatoes that have been seasoned with sea salt, pepper, and turmeric. I’ve also been experimenting with tahini in recipes for sweeter baked goods with delicious success!
