How to Make Homemade Mulling Spice

This easy Homemade Mulling Spice will transform apple cider, apple juice, or even red wine into a delicious holiday drink. A combination of citrus and warm spices, this Homemade Mulling Spice is simple to make and would make a wonderful edible gift for your friends and family!

Cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice, cloves – the ingredients of any spice-loving foodie’s fantasy, and also the beginnings of a cozy, warm, festive spice blend. Add in some cardamom, star anise, and citrus and you’ve got yourself the perfect flavours for a delicious mulling spice.

Also, who knew that star anise smells like black licorice?! Neither of us actually like black licorice – Curt always gave away his black licorice as a kid. But it smells SO good! The star anise adds a wonderful note to this Homemade Mulling Spice and it also has the perk of being one of the prettiest spices there is.

This Homemade Mulling Spice has some dried zest of lemon and orange mixed in with the warm, fragrant spices. We like to use organic lemons and oranges for this recipe because we’re using the skin. You can zest the citrus using a standard vegetable peeler, which will create large ribbons that can be easily dried in a warm oven (or a dehydrator if you have one). When zesting the citrus, try to peel only the coloured part of the skin, avoiding as much of the pith (the white stuff) as possible. The pith will add a bitter note to your blend, and nobody wants that.

Pulling this Homemade Mulling Spice together is incredibly simple:

We have a small hammer in one of our kitchen drawers. Curt’s not a huge fan of it: it’s small, super girly, and covered in a floral pattern. BUT it works perfectly! You can also use a rolling pin or even a meat pounder to break down all the spices and zesty ribbons.

As much as we love hot chocolate as a warm drink during the cold months, we love sipping on a warm mug of mulled apple cider. It’s sweet and delicately spiced, and takes very little effort make:
  • Add a couple tablespoons of Homemade Mulling Spice to a tea satchel or reusable tea bag.
  • Toss the satchel into your apple cider (or juice or wine) and let it simmer in a pot on the stove for about an hour.
  • Enjoy!

Bonus – your house will smell Ah-MAZING.

This Homemade Mulling Spice makes the perfect holiday gift. Wrap up a pretty jar of this festive spice along with a jar of Healthy Chocolate Hazelnut Spread and you’ve got a healthy edible gift anyone would be excited to receive.
