We’ve had our fair share of FREEEEEZING temps the past few weeks. It’s actually been the longest cold snap Calgary has seen in twenty years and it doesn’t seem to want to let up anytime soon. I know, I know. It’s February…in Canada…

To help combat the constant chill, we’ve been enjoying bowls upon bowls of Hearty Homemade Hamburger Soup made with delicious and nourishing bone broth. We’ve also been opting to stay in, cozying up by the fire with all the blankets, and watching a movie (or Jeopardy – we sometimes like to act like an 80-year old couple) while sipping on this yummy Homemade Mushroom Hot Chocolate.

Yes. Mushroom Hot Chocolate.

Why, you might wonder, would we add mushrooms to this homemade hot chocolate recipe?

For one, you can’t taste ’em. But more importantly, medicinal mushrooms, like the ones we use in this recipe, are amazing for your health. For this recipe, we used a powder blend of five mushrooms from Harmonic Arts. This mushroom blend is a combination of chaga, reishi, cordyceps, lion’s mane, and turkey tail – all with their own incredible health benefits.

What are some of the benefits of these medicinal mushrooms?

So now that we’ve convinced you that mushrooms and hot chocolate do, in fact, go together, it won’t be too hard to convince you that mushrooms and cookies are a great pair, too.

That’s the beauty of this medicinal mushroom powder – you can pretty much add it to anything! Smoothies, soups, salad dressings…and yummy, yummy cookies. We gave a boost to our favourite Walnut Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies by adding 2 tsp of the mushroom powder to the cookie dough before baking. They were still so, so good. No one would be the wiser!

And everyone can agree: cookies and hot chocolate most definitely go together.

The base of this Homemade Mushroom Hot Chocolate is made with our homemade coconut milk (although you can use whichever milk fits your fancy). The coconut milk is warmed on the stove, then whisked together with the cocoa powder, a pinch of cinnamon, the mushroom powder, and a lil’ raw honey for some sweetness. Pour the creamy mushroom hot chocolate into your favourite mug and this healthy cold-weather favourite is ready to enjoy!

What’s your favourite comfort food or drink for chilly winter days?
