Easy Homemade Grass-Fed Beef Burgers

These easy Homemade Grass-Fed Beef Burgers take just five minutes to prepare and are seasoned simply with salt and pepper. Cook them in a cast iron skillet or on the grill and enjoy burger night any day of the week!

I spend quite a bit of time in the kitchen and I truly love it. I enjoy creating healthy snacks and making nourishing meals that I know will serve our bodies well and taste delicious. But, as much as I love cooking and baking, there’s something to be said about a quick meal – one that takes no time at all to prepare, especially after a long day at work.

One of our go-tos? Burgers.

Curt’s Dad makes some the most amazing burgers around so we’ve learned from the best. He often grinds his own meat from steak to make homemade burgers (sooo good!) but in general, he keeps it all very simple: meat, salt, pepper.

While we don’t grind our own meat, we do always choose the best quality we can. We buy organic, grass-fed ground beef from a local farm that raises their cows humanely, never exposes them to hormones or antibiotics, and feeds them a lifelong diet of grass. Grass-fed beef is a much healthier option than conventional meat, as it contains a significantly higher ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 essential fatty acids (a balanced ratio is important for maintaining optimal health).

The prep time for these burgers is super quick and only takes about five minutes. We like to weigh the burgers so they’ll all cook at the same rate, then form them into patties with a mason jar lid (the perfect size!), and cook them in our cast iron skillet (or barbecue during the summer months).

As you can see, we don’t shy away from including quality meat in our meals. We love making our Easy Instant Pot Shredded Chicken for weekly meal prep, and our Slow Cooker Chicken Curry or Hearty Homemade Hamburger Soup when we’re craving comfort food. We believe animal protein has an important place in a healing diet, but we also believe in the power of plants. We follow a lot of the principles of Dr. Terry Wahls, who emphasizes a diet rich in vegetables and some fruit. In The Wahls Protocol, the importance of consuming a variety of leafy greens, sulfur-rich vegetables, and coloured veg and fruit is clear – nine cups per day is recommended!

To help us get in those “cups” on burger night, we’ll often fill our plate with a mixed green salad and another vegetable side or two. Burgers pair well with so many veggies, so the options are endless:
  • Roasted veg (Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, carrots)
  • Sweet potato (mashed, roasted, or even used as a “bun”)
  • Fermented veggies (sauerkraut, kimchi, or “real” pickles)
  • Greens (salads, kale chips, or collards to wrap up that juicy burger and all its toppings)

And then there’s all those lip-smacking toppings. Avocado is a must for us for it’s creamy richness. We also usually add a spoonful of homemade salsa too, but that’s just scratching the surface: tomato, crispy red onion, a lil’ bacon, lettuce, micro greens…again, the options are endless.

These Homemade Grass-Fed Beef Burgers are a yummy part of our dinner rotation each week. And when we want to switch it up? We use ground lamb, a protein we only first tried a few months ago but enjoy so much!

What does burger night look like for you? What are your favourite burger sides and toppings?
